Their idea is that "spam" will be reduced for their clients, as "spammers" are less likely to pay for sending their emails.

Now there is the obvious issue of AOL controlling the free access of information that the Internet provides... but the real problem is, how does this help their customers?

Spam comes in many forms and guises... but lets say for instance that I wanted to send an email to an AOL customer. The customer hasn't asked to receive information from me and we never had any communication in the past. However, because AOL has said that I can pay them to send emails to their customers... I can bypass all the usual filters and guarantee that my email arrives in the recipient's inbox. So the account holder still cannot control what arrives in their inbox.

So you tell me - how does this stop AOL account users receiving Spam?

Tags: Email Tax
Tags: AOL
Tags: Spam

Email Marketing & Open Rates

Today I was asked an interesting question in relation to open rates in Email Marketing. Their point was - it doesn't matter how many people open the email (open rates), all that matters is how many click on the links within your mail (click throughs). I know a lot of people would agree..

In one word why are open rates so important to Marketers - Answer: Branding. You need to get your brand in front of your audience...so the next time someone tells you not to worry about open rates, you know better.

Tags: Email Marketing
Tags: Open Rates
Tags: Branding
Tags: Click Throughs

Email Marketing - Check and recheck your message before sending

Just last week I was about to send an email out to tens of thousands of customers... there were 6 or 7 different links to certain information and promotions... however, as I was waiting for some content on our site to be put up.. I omitted one link while this was been created.

So as you do, I went about my other million tasks for that day. Finally, I was informed the new webpage was on the server - so I went back to my mailing... had a quick read through once more and then sent the mail to my gmail, hotmail and work account (as I always do).. Thankfully I did. At this point I noticed when I clicked on one of the links nothing happened. This of course was one of the most important links in my campaign.

The moral of the story is... always check and recheck your mail, maybe send to a colleague or friend to read over it...it could save you or your company a lot of embarrassment!

Tags: Email Marketing

Email Marketing - When is the best day to send your email campaign?

The most important tip I can give to all budding marketers is to measure, measure and measure some more...this is very important when deciding which is the best day to send your email campaign.

When setting up an email marketing campaign - don't be afraid to try things out. Over the last six months, I have read numerous articles and statistics that tell you that this day or that day is the best day to send your email campaign. My feeling is that one size does not fit all...for example, if your product is aimed at the home user, then maybe the weekend is a good day to send your mail - in contrast if your product appeals to the business community, than a weekend mailing might not yield the best results.

My point is, measure the effects of your campaigns - send your mail on Tuesday this week and measure the results - try not to change much in your mail and send it on a Wednesday the following week and so on... you'll soon find out the best day of the week to send your campaign!

Just so you know - I send my campaigns on a Tuesday! Let me know when you normally send your mailing.. Vote Here!

Tags: email marketing

Email Marketing - Explaining the terms

One of the things I found most confusing when I started in this business - trying to figure out what on earth people were talking about. People were throwing words around like, bounce backs (must be something to do with basketball?), Click-through rates and trigger based messaging and so on..it was like I was waking up to a whole new language.

Now, I was going to write out all the terms here and explain each of them to you... however I had a better idea - Wikipedia have some great definitions on their site, so to get the low down on all the relevant terms, click on this link, it will give you a great starting point: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email_marketing

So now that you know what all the terms mean (or least you know where to reference them) - you are ready to begin on the road to Email Marketing enlightenment!

So over the weeks and months ahead, I'm going to try and get your open-rates up, your bounce backs down and your message delivered!

Tags: email marketing
Tags: wikipedia

Blog Overview

After speaking to a number of people at the Technology for Marketing conference in London a few weeks ago - http://www.t-f-m.co.uk. I actually look after the Marketing side of things. From time to time I find it difficult to get some good information on digital marketing... so I hope to share some of my thoughts on this matter over time.

I hope you enjoy it...

Tags: small business
Tags: digital marketing
